Welcome to the first post in my NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award series! In this blog, I’ll introduce the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and its flagship program, the Aspirations in Computing (AiC) Award. As a recipient of the National Honorable Mention AiC Award, I’ve had the chance to experience firsthand how this program celebrates achievements, creates mentorship, and unlocks incredible opportunities like scholarships and professional networks. This post will cover what NCWIT is, why its mission is so important, and how the AiC Award empowers students like me to thrive in computing. If you’re curious about the organization, inspired by its goals, or thinking about applying for the award, you’ve come to the right place!
What is NCWIT?
The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) is a nonprofit organization on a mission to increase the participation of women, girls, and underrepresented groups in computing and technology. From K-12 education to higher education and into the workforce, NCWIT provides resources, programs, and a supportive community to break down systemic barriers in the tech industry.
At its heart, NCWIT envisions a future where the technological innovations shaping our world reflect diverse voices and perspectives. Its initiatives address the gender gap in computing and aim to build a more inclusive and equitable tech industry for everyone.
Why Does NCWIT Matter?
The underrepresentation of women and minorities in computing remains a significant challenge with far-reaching consequences. Women account for less than a quarter of the computing workforce, with even lower representation among women of color and other marginalized groups. NCWIT addresses this gap by empowering individuals to pursue careers in tech, thereby creating a more equitable workforce. Studies show that diverse teams deliver better solutions to problems, which makes inclusivity in tech both a moral and economic necessity. By celebrating diverse talents and providing access to critical resources, NCWIT is reshaping the industry for the better.
How NCWIT Creates Change
One of NCWIT’s most powerful strengths is its holistic approach to creating change. The organization operates across multiple levels, offering tailored resources and programs to address barriers at every stage:
K-12 Education: Programs inspire young students by aligning computing with their interests, providing role models, and encouraging persistence.
Higher Education: Universities gain resources to create inclusive curricula, combat unconscious biases, and nurture a sense of belonging.
Workforce Development: Companies receive tools and strategies to build diverse workplace cultures and equitable hiring practices.
Aspirations in Computing (AiC): NCWIT’s flagship program provides students with mentorship, recognition, scholarships, and a thriving community.
Aspirations in Computing (AiC): Empowering Young Women
The Aspirations in Computing (AiC) program, a flagship initiative of NCWIT, is designed to amplify the voices of high school and college women, genderqueer, and non-binary students in computing. AiC creates a sense of belonging, confidence, and motivation by recognizing their achievements and encouraging their passions. Since its inception, this program has created a supportive and welcoming community, connecting over 30,000 members across the United States and beyond. By providing resources, mentorship, and awards, AiC is reshaping what’s possible for women and underrepresented groups in technology.
AiC uses prestigious awards, scholarships, internships, and professional opportunities to empower students. These recognitions not only celebrate technical and leadership accomplishments but also reward persistence and resilience in the face of challenges. The impact is significant—90% of past AiC award winners report pursuing a major or minor in a STEM field, furthering their growth as future leaders in computing.
How AiC Works: Awards and Recognitions
The AiC High School Award honors students from grades 9 through 12 for their computing-related achievements, interests, and aspirations. Awards are granted at both National and Regional Affiliate levels, with recipients evaluated based on their:
Technical accomplishments.
