NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award (Part 1): What It Is, Why It Matters, and How It Empowers Women in Computational Fields

Welcome to the first post in my NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award series! In this blog, I’ll introduce the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and its flagship program, the Aspirations in Computing (AiC) Award. As a recipient of the National Honorable Mention AiC Award, I’ve had the chance to experience firsthand how this program celebrates achievements, creates mentorship, and unlocks incredible opportunities like scholarships and professional networks. Women account for less than a quarter of the computing workforce, with even lower representation among women of color and other marginalized groups. NCWIT addresses this gap by empowering individuals to pursue careers in tech, thereby creating a more equitable workforce. Studies show that diverse teams deliver better solutions to problems, which makes inclusivity in tech both a moral and economic necessity. By celebrating diverse talents and providing access to critical resources, NCWIT is reshaping the industry for the better.

Aspirations in Computing (AiC): Empowering Young Women

The Aspirations in Computing (AiC) program, a flagship initiative of NCWIT, is designed to amplify the voices of high school and college women, genderqueer, and non-binary students in computing. AiC creates a sense of belonging, confidence, and motivation by recognizing their achievements and encouraging their passions. Since its inception, this program has created a supportive and welcoming community, connecting over 30,000 members across the United States and beyond. By providing resources, mentorship, and awards, AiC is reshaping what’s possible for women and underrepresented groups in technology.

AiC uses prestigious awards, scholarships, internships, and professional opportunities to empower students. These recognitions not only celebrate technical and leadership accomplishments but also reward persistence and resilience in the face of challenges. The impact is significant—90% of past AiC award winners report pursuing a major or minor in a STEM field, furthering their growth as future leaders in computing.

How AiC Works: Awards and Recognitions

The AiC High School Award honors students from grades 9 through 12 for their computing-related achievements, interests, and aspirations. Awards are granted at both National and Regional Affiliate levels, with recipients evaluated based on their:

• Technical accomplishments.

• Leadership experience.

• Overcoming barriers to access.

Since 2007, over 25,000 students have received AiC awards, cementing its reputation as one of the most influential programs for young women in computing.

  • Winner (40): The highest-achieving students in the nation.

  • Honorable Mention (360): High-achieving students who demonstrate exceptional potential.

• Regional Affiliate Awards:

  • Winner: Students who have significantly demonstrated interest and aptitude for computing.

  • Honorable Mention: Students recognized for their computing achievements and potential.

  • Rising Star: Students who are beginning their journey in computing and show promise for future exploration.

Prizes vary by award designation but often include:

• Cash prizes and a trip to a celebration event.

• Engraved awards, certificates, and medals.

• Access to scholarships and internship opportunities.

• Induction into the exclusive AiC community.
